Hermanus Whale Festival

Crowds at the whale festivalThe Hermanus Whale Festival, the only Enviro-Arts festival in South Africa, is held annually to celebrate the return of the Southern Right whales to the waters of Walker Bay. It takes place at the end of September and usually lasts 3-4 days.

Thousands of visitors flock to Hermanus to exhilarate in the unique natural environment, watch whales, revel in music, comedy, cabaret and African rhythms throughout the Festival. There's a large environmental sustainable expo, which includes talks by marine specialists, a food and wine emporium and educational activities for the little festinos.

Some other activities include:

  • A Slofish Fare at the Old Harbour with emphasis being placed on the South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI).
  • Art ramble and an exhibition
  • The Whales 'n Wheels Vintage Classic Car Show
  • Sporting events such as a half-marathon and boxing tournament
  • The popular Whale Festival Classic Charity Golf Event which is held at Arabella
  • Kids Morning Markets
  • And, of course, whale watching, kayaking, shark cage diving, Fynbos hikes and whatever grabs your fancy.
