Hermanus lies on a narrow coastal plain
bordering Walker Bay, home to the sourhern right whales each year. It is overlooked by beautiful Cape fold mountains
filled with fynbos which attracts a wide variety of birds, mammals and
insects. The beaches are white, powdery sand and the bay is filled with
little coves. Just around the corner from Hermanus, on the way to Cape
Town, lie the residential suburbs of Sandbaai, Onrus River, Vermont and
Hawston. Across the bay is Gansbaai (meaning Goose Bay), an active fishing
harbour and perhaps the most famous Great White Shark cage-diving spot in
the world.
