Whale Watching from cliff paths in  Hermanus

The most enjoyable aspect to whale watching in Hermanus is the ability to wander the cliff paths which stretch from one side of town to the other - some 12 kilometres in all. And much of the distance is wheelchair-friendly! There is access to the paths from many points, so you can opt to walk only as far as you please.

From these paths you often spot the whales mere metres away from you. At many points along the paths you'll come across large information boards with beautifully illustrated information on not just whales and whale watching, but a variety of sea life and coastal conservation in general.

Another thing you'll notice is the number of benches at prominent spots.  Many of these benches have been donated by private individuals in memory of deceased loved ones. Look for the brass plaques at the back of the benches.

Walking along the section leading to the beaches is a lovely experience, enabling one to step off the paths and explore the many tiny coves along the way.

Like jogging? Here you'll get plenty of calf exercise.

While strolling the cliff paths you'll encounter so much more than just whales.  For most of the distance you wander through magnificent coastal fynbos for which the region is world famous. Birds chatter beside you as you walk.

Are they safe? Generally, yes. The paths are patrolled by officers of the Hermanus Public Protection, but it's wise not to walk alone or after dark.  Leave the jewellery at home.Rock rabbit

Another inhabitant you're likely to encounter on your walks is the dassie or rock rabbit - family of the elephant. You'll scoff at that notion when you see one, but take a closer look at its shape and you'll see the resemblance.

Whale watching in Hermanus ... simply unbeatable!
